Sometime last year I set out to research charities that we could align with, in the spirit of giving back a little to our community, and supporting a cause close to our hearts. The choice to go with Starlight Children’s Foundation was an easy one 🙂 We wanted something uplifting, filled with hope and joy, something that brightened the lives of children and spread some love and warmth at a time when they might most be needing it. Starlight totally fit the bill.
Starlight was formed in 1988 for the benefit of seriously ill and sick children facing lengthy periods in hospital. Rather than focus on the medical aspects of illness, Starlight focuses on creating an awesome experience for the children, lifting their spirits, providing safe, caring and fun environments for them to play, laugh, and feel like a child. The emphasis is on the child, not the illness.
From the magic of the super hero Captain Starlight who spreads laughter, fun and games across the Starlight Express Room at Princess Margaret Hospital, to the wish-granting of the dream-come-true-variety, the lives of chronically ill children and that of their families are transformed by this incredible organisation.
Last Tuesday I was invited to attend a special morning tea at Princess Margaret and see for myself the facilities and programs that Starlight has running. And this was a special privilege indeed, for adults are not allowed in the Livewire room – the adolescent dedicated space, complete with full arts facilities, recording studio, kitchen, and a general ‘hang out’ room that any young adult would be lost in for hours.
It’s easy to be awestruck by what the generousity of others has enabled them to create. And I don’t think there’s many parents out there who wouldn’t walk through those colourful corridors and just know how incredible this gift would be to a child, and a family, unfortunate enough to need hospital care. And then, you remember that this is all done with no government funding, and solely with the support of the public and corporate sponsors. Wow. Seriously.
I could babble all day about how inspiring the place was, how awesome the dedicated staff are, and how lucky our children are to have this service. But to learn all about that, simply visit the Starlight page HERE and read it all for yourself.
For the months of May and June, the session fee from each session booked will be donated to Starlight Children’s Foundation. It’s our small contribution to this worthy cause. For all of you who have thinking about having family portraits, who are lucky enough to have healthy children and who value capturing them in portraits, please book your session within this time. To book, simply click HERE and your payment will be processed immediately. We are also offering prizes and gift certificates for Starlight to auction at their events and will be updating our facebook page and blog regularly with Starlight news.
